My wassail tradition!
I really should take notes every year and try to remember the things I do wrong. Like the fact that I've already been to the store 3 times and I'm going to have to go again. I can't make a double batch in my stock pot. A double batch is only enough for handing out and not enough for the family.
Oh look, I just took some notes! Thanks :)

Santa Claus
We've never bought presents for our kids and said they are from Santa. Actually, we haven't bought our kids a whole lot because Ryan was either in school, we didn't plan well or we just don't feel our kids need a lot of stuff.
Back to Santa, once we had our second and they were getting older, we thought we should explain Santa because, seriously, you can't avoid him altogether, especially when they start making friends. Everywhere you look, Santa is there!
We explained the tradition of Santa. Well at least as much as I know. There was a nice man who gave people gifts, or Saint Nicholas. Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, I may not know or remember the traditions of where Santa came from. I may have to do some googling.....
After all the work we've done to not believe in Santa, last year and this year, my kids still believe he is real. They don't expect him to bring them gifts, but he sure is real. They talk about where he lives and what his elves look like. It didn't help that when we moved, we have a real live Santa in our LDS ward. He really is, he even wears red and green suit coats.
Santa is now a non issue in our family. Which means we don't say he real and brings us presents and we don't go off about him not being real. We still talk about the many different traditions of who he is, which I will learn again because my mind is mush, and he will continue being a nice old man who has reindeer and elves.
Do you have things you've changed as your kids have gotten older? Or since you, yourself have gotten older?

Christmas has begun
For some reason this year I just don't care. I think its because for me and my family, each holiday has its justice. I get excited for Halloween and my kids getting to pretend they are someone different. OK, they do this all year long but it gives us an excuse to have other people buy us candy.
Thanksgiving is also one in its own right. The food! I love Thanksgiving food. The sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, stuffing, salads, veggies, they're all so yummy. It gives you a reason to get with family and friends and eat such delicious food.
Yes, Christmas is very commercialized but it is what you make it. If you're going to be grumpy about all the stuff advertisers tell you to buy than yes, its going to be stressful. You don't have to have a lot of money or buy a lot of things for Christmas to be fun. You can enjoy it by creating your own traditions. Oh yea and if you want Christ in Christmas, have him. All those other grumps can't tell you what you do in your home.
So even though you're already seeing commercials and advertisements for Christmas, I would like to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving!

Weight Loss
I wish I knew why I can get it started but not keep it going. I know its something you have to do. You can't just be healthy for a few months and then stop doing it. I guess that's not actually being healthy. That's teasing your body to think you care and then yank it away.
Again, I just had a baby. I've started walking with friends, on the treadmill, and riding my bike. I've lost a whole 2 pounds in 3 weeks. I have a plan for Thanksgiving and Christmas. This is the first time I've actually had my own treadmill and bike, so I'm hoping that helps. I'm pretty sure I can keep with it, for 3 months.
Now, what I'd like to know is how I can keep this going after 3 months? Do you have any favorites workouts or videos? I have 20lbs I want to lose and I really just want to be able to play with my kids next summer without getting tired. Oh yea, and the summer after.........

Dates
We've always been really good at making each other priority. At our old place we lived close enough to stores, the library, and a park. We would go for walks to these various places and have time to talk and spend time with each other. It's never really been hard to make that time. Then we moved here, into a house. As most people know, houses are more responcibility than apartments. The lawn has to be mowed. More square footage to clean. A garden needs to be taken care of. Projects need to be done. Kids soccer games must be played. There just isn't the same amount of time as we used to have.
When we first moved here, I had mentioned to a friend that maybe we could do a trade. I was sort of joking because I haven't ever had anyone willing or had the guts to come right out and ask. She asked if I was serious, I think mostly because she has 6 kids and wasn't sure if I'd want to do that with her. I told her I'd be all for it because it would give us a date and time for our kids to get together and play.
A few months passed and she asked me if I was still interested. Last month was our first time. It was nice. We actually didn't know what to do with ourselves. We went to the 'new' Joseph Smith movie downtown and had some dinner. We were maybe gone for 2 hours. When we got back, they couldn't figure out why we were home so early. Today we got our second date. We made it 4 hours but that's because the movie was 2 and a half hours. It was nice to be able to get some time for each other, and once a month seems to work for now. It may change once our kids get a bit older.

Pioneer Woman
She has a new cookbook out and was coming to Salt Lake on her signing tour. I really wanted to go. I even put it in my phone calender because that's the only way I remember things. Even after knowing about it for two weeks, I didn't plan ahead at all.
At 6:00 that night I started calling some friends to see if anyone wanted to join me. Forgetting that when I call friends, I have to talk for a good 20 minutes which doesn't help when trying to get out of the house on time. After a few friends said they couldn't go, I thought it would be kind of fun to just take Frog with me. We don't get to get out much, just the two of us, and I figured Ryan could do without the 2 year old 'helping' him.
I grabbed some cash really fast, $30 to be precise. The signing started at 7:00, and by 7:15 we were on our way. I made it all the way to Salt Lake when my gas light turned on. Of course I didn't bring my wallet, because I had cash! Why would I need more money? I stopped at a gas station and put $5 worth of gas in my tank.
I drove up to the book store, found a spot, and got in line. When I got there, someone in front of me was buying a book from someone leaving. I asked them if there were any books inside. They informed me they had heard they were sold out. Great, I drive all this way to a BOOK signing without a BOOK! I started to get a little flustered but was reminded there is a Barnes and Noble just down the road. Perfect!
I lost my perfect parking spot and drove down to Barnes and Noble. I walked in and finally find the cookbook section when I see an employee walking past. I was staring at him trying to figure out if he is an employee or not when he asked me if he could help me because I looked confused. I asked if he knew where the Pioneer Lady's cookbook was and two other girls said they're looking for it too. We walk over to his computer where he searches. They have 1 book and it costs $27.50.
If you've paid attention, you will see I didn't have $27.50. I had $25.00. Leave it to me to mess up a great opportunity to meet someone cool. I informed the two ladies I didn't have enough money and started walking away. The employee told me he could order me one. Ummm, no thanks. At this point that won't do me any good, and besides Amazon has it for $14.50. The last thing I heard was the ladies going back and forth "No, you take the book. No, you can have it......"
Feeling deflated we went over to Old Navy and bought Frog some pants. I needed to buy something :)
My lesson to you. If you want to go to a book signing, you should go with the book and not expect to buy it there. Make sure your tank is filled and oh yea, get there early because that place was packed!

Halloween
We got there early so the kids could do the carnival they always have before the game. They were also able to be in a parade they had for the first 250 kids in costume. It was so much fun for them and they actually went out there all by themselves!
This is the view of the field from our seats. Fourth row up! Best seats we've ever gotten.
Here are the kids on the field as the players are coming out. They kept trying to find me and I think they were more concerned about that than the fact that they were right there near the players. I love that right now I'm cooler!

College
After Ryan graduated, I was able to take another semester of college because I wasn't quite ready to move out of student housing. For some reason, when you graduate, they don't want you to live there. For me it was just too hard to have kids and go to school. It was then that we wondered why I didn't just go to the school at the same time as Ryan. Oh yea, I remember, I had no idea what kind of degree I'd want to get.
Now that We have our family, Ryan has talked about working the second shift at work so I could go to school. I really don't want to because we did 5 years of that. Him working and going to school and me never seeing him. If he worked the second shift so he could watch the kids while I went to school, I would never see him. That just doesn't work for me. For some reason I like to see my husband.
My plan is to go to school when our youngest is in school. I have 5 or so years left. I keep thinking what I want to get a degree in. Once upon a time I wanted to be a doula, but now that I'm done having babies I think I'm done with birth stuff as an obsession. It's weird to say that because it was all encompassing. I think that's something I've learned about myself. I take something I'm interested in and dive into it. Once I'm done, I'm done. Makes me sound a bit fickle, I know.
Another option has been Gender Studies. I don't remember why exactly, but it seemed interesting and I might be able to do it. I've also loved cooking and I'm still contemplating Culinary School. I know I don't really want to work in a restaurant because I've heard its a high stress job. I've taken up photography as a hobby lately and I've wondered about doing that. It would be cool to learn the workings of a camera and be able to take amazing pictures. Although I may have to work with people and that's really never been my favorite thing to do.
Ryan really thinks I need to get a degree in something, but I still can't decide which of my interests I should pursue. I at least have a few more years to decide because I really can't go while Bear is still nursing and we don't have the money to pay for my tuition. I guess for now I get to be the mom who has too many interests and needs to just keep learning without a degree.

Classes
You can actually buy the classes and I of course bought the photography one because the first time I watched the class live, all I seem to hear is 'blah, blah, blah'. This way I will get to watch the classes over and over and over. Some of it is sticking, but mostly I just chat with my fellow classmates.
They are awesome teachers and also do a retouch Thursday where you can see the teacher in action. It really is crazy all the things you can do in Photoshop with your pictures. I've learned I want to take better pictures so I don't have to edit so much. Photoshop just seems like a foreign language.
Oh and get this, they have other classes! Like Lightroom and Dreamweaver. I've been told I should buy Lightroom. Adobe offers a free trial, so I figure I could at least try it out. Thankfully I can buy it at a discount because my kids are in school.
I'm not sure what I've gotten myself into, but at least I have something to keep myself busy two times a week.

-Elmo can be watched over and over and over......
-When you buy ice cream, you have to share.
-I will pay thousands of dollars to bring my babies into this world.
-Puzzles should never be done one at a time.
-Newborns make excellent weights when exercising.
-Changing a diaper is one of the worst things you can do to a child.
-Ceiling fans are very entertaining.
-Having your 3rd and 4th is a lot easier with the older ones help.

H1N1
"Point 1. As things stand now, the vast majority of children who develop flu-like symptoms this fall will have a few miserable days, and nothing more. And those days are best spent at home -- not in the ER or a doctor's office.
Point 2. If you are worried, you should call your pediatrician's office first. Don't take your child in without calling. Two reasons: Your child may not have H1N1, but could become exposed by being around sick children. And, after several hours of waiting, you are still likely to be told the basics -- plenty of fluids, rest and dose-appropriate acetaminophen for a fever. After all, it is still the flu we are talking about.
Dr. Gupta talks preparedness with HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius »
Point 3. One doctor told me a way to think about things that was helpful. He said "remove the term H1N1 from the equation." If your child had regular flu, would you take him to the hospital? If the answer is no, then don't take him/her to the hospital now.
Point 4. Yes, hearing between 30,000 and 90,000 could die from H1N1 is scary, but keep in mind -- around 40,000 people die from the regular or seasonal flu every year. The numbers may not be that much different, yet there is not panic about the regular flu. As things look now, H1N1 is causing only mild to moderate illness, not the widespread deaths people are worried about.
Point 5. There are some children who should be seen by their doctor. Call your doctor if:
• A baby younger than 12 weeks has a fever greater than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit
• A child, older than 12 weeks has a fever for three days
• A child's fever returns after a 12-24 hour time period
• A child is not passing urine or making tears for more than six hours
• A child does not smile or show interest in playing for several hours
Dial 911 if:
• A child cannot speak while trying to breathe
• Has a blue or dark purple color to the nail beds, lips or gums
• Is not responding to you because he is too tired or weak

One point that was reinforced to me over and over again by the pediatricians is the best place for a sick child is at home. And, with regard to school -- after 24 fever-free hours without the aid of medications, he or she can go back.
This is the advice that my wife and I will be following this fall for our own children. Hope it is helpful to you, and the media can score an "A," at least this time around"Depression
I finally admitted to Ryan that I was feeling this way and also called my midwife to see what we can start doing. I figure the sooner we start, the better.

Zucchini pie
Zucchini Pie
4-5 cups sliced zucchini (sliced like apples)
1 cup sugar
¼ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
¼ teaspoon allspice
½ teaspoon cream of tartar
2 table spoons flour or corn starch
Pinch of salt
Peel, core, and cut the zucchini. Boil it for 5 min, or until soft. Drain water and add all the other ingredients. Bake @ 400º for 10 min and then bake on 350º for 20 min or until golden brown
First you peel, core, and cut the zucchini. The one above I would cut in half and then thinly slice so they look like apples for apple pie.
Next you boil all the zucchini, drain, and then add all the ingredients.
Stir it all up. I don't know if you can tell, but the zucchini middle will be liquidy. The first time I made it, I freaked out and thought that was bad but its ok. That is why you add the corn starch.
Here is the finished product. The boys like it when I put fun designs on the top crust. I had enough zucchinis to make 4 pies. One is already gone and I'll take another to our ward campout tomorrow.
I like to eat it cold :)
Oh, he isn't part of the pie but I wanted to show this picture I got of him smiling in his sleep :) I finally figured out how to get him to sleep not in my arms. Swaddling!

First day of school
Owl had his first day last Wed and Monkey has his yesterday. He was so excited for kindergarten he wanted to skip breakfast and just go!
I also thought I'd add this picture of Frog. She got caught painting her toe nails. Impressively she didn't get any on the floor.
Here is my 39.5 week picture.

No baby
First of all, yes, if I walk up to you and still have a huge belly, I am still pregnant. Oh and no, I haven't had the baby yet. The when will you be induced is just plain silly. My body knew how to make the baby, it's not going to suddenly forget how to get it out. Oh yea and who are these "they" who are going to "let" me go to a certain amount of weeks? I mean seriously! Who ever said a pregnancy is supposed to be 38 weeks and if you don't go by 40, you're overdue. For crying out loud, every woman 'bakes' a baby for their own amount of time and no Dr. is going to tell me when to have this baby.
I know I'm uncomfortable and would love to be able to sleep a full night without waking up with heartburn or having to use the restroom two times a night. I would love to be able to lay on my back, stomach or get out of bed without having to use my leg on the side to pull myself out. But you know what? It matters to me if I force my baby out of me when he/she is not ready. Who am I or some Dr. to say he/she is ready?
So there you have it! Here is my plea to everyone, I promise, we will let you know when the baby comes. I love you but I can't handle being asked every day if I've had the baby. I don't even want to call and talk to anyone because they might think I had the baby and get all dissapointed that I haven't.

School
We found out two weeks ago that Monkey got into the local charter school but Owl just got put on the sibling priority list. He was number one or two and they said if a slot opened up between now and October 1st, he would get in. I got a phone call this afternoon from the school telling me a slot opened up! I was so excited because the prospect of having to take my kids to two different schools sounded doable, but not very fun.
They had a picnic last Friday where we could meet their teachers and Owl was a little upset he wasn't able to meet his. Hopefully he will get to meet his this week when we get to go in and fill out all the registration stuff and he gets to take tests to see where he stands.
This school basically teaches the same things as the other charter school we went to but has a different math. I'm hoping its not too bad and the boys will do great in the school.

Fat lip
On our way out, I was walking toward the van with Owl and Frog behind. Monkey decided Frog wasn't being fast enough, so he picked her up and started running toward me. I looked back just in time to watch him trip and they both flew forward. Monkey skinned his knee and Frog smacked her forehead and mouth on the sidewalk.
I took her into the bathroom and cleaned her up as best I could, leaving my poor boys outside with the stroller.
We got into the van and she fell asleep pretty soon after. I was headed to the chiropractor for myself and I figured I'd get her checked out too. On my way there, I called Ryan and the doctor. The nurse called me back and said to just watch her and because it didn't go through her lip, she should be ok. I still need to check and see if her teeth are loose.
We got to the chiropractors a half hour early and I figured I would let Frog sleep.
I was happy that when she woke up she knew who everyone was and was her happy self, talking about her brothers and her ouchy.
Here are the boys waiting patiently in the parking lot.
I swear this girl has had more head injuries than any of my kids.
oh and if you're interested or care, here is my 35.5 week belly picture. This was taken a week ago and I'm almost 37 weeks, which is when it is legal for me to have a baby at home. No this child still does not have a name and won't until he is born, in case you're wondering.

Face painting
We went to a block party to meet a few of our new neighbors. There was a lady who was painting the kids faces. I was surprised when my kids volunteered their faces to be painted. Owl asked for an decepticon but she said she didn't know how to draw that and would need a picture. She gave him a few choices, a black widow, a skull, or a scorpion. He chose the scorpion. Luckily she did it in his favorite color. Monkey then asked for the same thing but in green, his favorite color. When Frog saw the boys getting theirs done, she wanted to do it too! I was given a choice, a princess or a butterfly. I of course chose the butterfly. I was shocked again when Frog let her draw this awesome butterfly on her face.
Anyway, here are the pictures of my kids very cute face paintings. I had to run home to get the camera because not 2 minutes later, they were already smeared.
I for one felt like an idiot and didn't know what to do or how to talk to people. By the time it got dark, I at least found someone to talk to about birth. Yes, I know, I talk a lot about it but I'm a bit obsessed. It helps when you're pregnant to bring up the topic. It was nice to talk to someone so open about it and not judgemental for all my weird birthing choices.

10 year reunion
Last night we went to the dinner for just adults. There weren't as many people as I was hoping to see. Thankfully they brought our Senior yearbook and I was able to look some people up. I really can't seem to remember anyone. Oh, and do you have this problem? I couldn't for the life of me remember if I knew certain people or if I just knew who they were. Ugh, what do you do then? I guess I could have just gone up to them and talked, but then I would have had to crawl out of my shell.
After we had gotten our picture taken, one of my classmates came up to me and informed me that we are related. He said his mom is my moms cousin. I guess before he came, his mom told him to look for me because I'm his second cousin. He said, 'you couldn't have told me this in high school?' I agree, I called my mom and said the same thing. I did think it was funny and I sort of remembered him.
Here are my fellow classmates who were there last night. Sorry to anyone if you don't look good but the other picture I have, I don't look good and we all know who this blog is about ;)

7th Birthday
I'm not quite sure where he got his ideas about birthdays. He starts talking about his next birthday the day after, July 17. He seems to think he doesn't have to do anything today! I asked him to fill up a water bottle for his sister but he says Monkey has to do it because its his birthday. Then there are the things people can say. He tells us certain words and phrases we can't say today. He also has his requests of what he wants for his birthday. Little does he know, its been bought for over a year, so hopefully he will just be happy.
Here are some fun pictures of him over the years :)

My chunky baby on the day he was born.

This kid loved the swings and we used to live in a place with a playground out our front door.

Enjoying some ice cream at a friends birthday party.
I love this face.
This last one is one year later than the previous and I can already see him losing his baby face. They just get so big so fast.
