Internal Dialogue

I've gotten kind of serious about my eating and making sure I eat enough so I bought a book by Jillian Michaels, Making the cut. In the book she has a 30 day challenge. She lines up everything you should eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack. Her claim is that you can lose 20lbs in 30 days, which is ironically how much I need to lose.

So far we've done 2 days and I'm not as tired or ornery. I am actually getting the right amount of protein, carbs, fat, and calories. I'm also working on not eating as much sugar. Saturday night I was discussing with Ryan the internal diologue I have, daily. I had previously written everything I ate that day and was already at my optimum totals. My head hurt a little bit and I started telling myself

"If you eat, it will make your headache go away. That's what you need, food."
"No, you can't have any more food, you've already had enough for the day and you're not actually hungry!"
"But, I need it, It will help. Oooo, there are these yummy caramel apple treats in the freezer, just eat one of those. You need it!"
"No, I don't need to eat that. Sugar isn't going to help you. You're just going to feel worse!"
"But, I want it! I need it!"
"You don't need it! If you eat sugar now, you're going to tell Ryan again that you now feel sick and your headache is worse."
"But, I really want it!"

After telling him all of this argument I had, I said I'm pretty sure I know what your internal dialogue is. "I'm hungry, let's eat!" It's just not fair, and it's so frustrating to go through this almost every day and night. I know I don't need any more food and I'm not hungry but I NEED it!

Would you like to know who won? The logical side. I went down and had some water. I let the water make me feel a little more full and Ryan had some ice cream. How is that for sweet rewards? ;-)

Goals

I don't really make new year resolutions but I do like to make goals a couple times a year. One new goal I have is to read the Bible cover to cover. I have a lot of friends who have been looking at their religious beliefs and I figure if I want to know anything for myself, I should at least really know what I'm talking about. I know I believe the Bible is a true book from God but I'm not sure that I've really read it cover to cover. I told Ryan and he is up for the Challenge too.

My next goal is to be present at bedtime. For some reason for the past couple years, OK really since Ryan graduated, I have had him do most of it. I join in sometimes, but I feel like I was getting him back for all his years in school. I'm ready to find that balance. Instead of one person being in charge of it all, we will do it together. Each kid can choose a book, we'll read some scriptures, and talk about our day. Last night was a success and I think I can actually keep this up.

Another, get frustrated less easily with the kids. I know, this is probably something I make a goal for every couple months. Kids are so much harder than I ever thought and it doesn't seem to be getting any easier, so I have to change my own attitude and be in charge of me. It's not their fault if I can't seem to control myself. I want to be able to easily admit my mistakes. I can't be better if I don't realize there's a problem. I need to mean my apologies and not just say them. I have to actually want to change and I do. I need to be the mom my kids deserve.

Last goal I've been thinking I need to work on, exercising 6 days a week and learning to feed my family better. The funny thing about weight loss is if you don't eat enough calories, your body will go into starvation mode and just not let the fat go. I have had some days where I only eat 900 calories and then run off 300. Yea, only having 600 calories for the day is not a good thing for my body. I'm working on getting back to having a menu for my family. I have bookmarked many good websites and we already tried a new yummy recipe last night. With exercise, I've been really good at going to my classes at the gym. I'm finally starting some of the harder classes because I think just the weights worked at first but my body needs to be challenged! I guess if I don't feel like throwing up at the end, it wasn't a good workout ;-) Running has been great, but I have some days where I just don't want to do it. I signed up for 3 relay races this year and a half marathon. If I don't keep that up, I'm going to feel like a failure for not working as hard as I know I can. So I will run at least 3 days a week, but preferably 4, and go to the gym classes 3 days a week.

These are my goals for the year, do you have any good ones you're making?
